How old is the Fellowship of St. Giles?

Does anyone here have any idea how far back the Fellowship of St. Giles goes?

I'm making up pregen characters for a 1960s DFRPG con adventure, and one of them is a Red Court Infected Vietnam survivor. I'm working on his background, and wondering if I can include the Fellowship in it or not. I'd like to, because it makes things easier, but if they're a more recent organization, I'm going to have to come up with another reason to keep him from turning into a full RC vampire (and thus becoming unplayable).

Suggested High Concepts for pregens in a one-shot DFRPG game?

Hi all!

I'm working on a one-shot DFRPG game set in the USA in the mid-to-late 1960s for my local gaming con next spring, and I'm having trouble finding inspiration for the pregenerated characters. I've got a White Court Vampire who's into Free Love and an idea for a Wizard, but beyond that, I'm drawing a blank.

Would anyone like to suggest some more ideas (I just need High Concepts, not full-fledged characters)? I'd like them to have a Sixties flavor if possible. :)

Need some ideas for rote spells

Finally I'm getting to play the game, an online Skype-based game. We're actually going to release it as an Actual Play podcast over at RPGMP3.com. We've done city building (we chose Austin) and we've done a little character building. I'm playing a Wizard and decided that I want him to be mostly focused on Water and Spirit sorts of things (Air as his 3rd starting element), but it's been kind of a hard thing finding many examples of Water evocations that I can use as inspiration. Especially for rote spells which I'd like to work. Can anybody point me in the direction of some examples or post some here if you've made some?

Even hand short story.

I really liked the story--Marcone is a very interesting character. One of my favorites. But I'm just confused about one thing: Why will he inevitably have to kill Harry? I mean--chances are that Harry is going to get whacked by vampires. Or a rival wizard. Or be too busy fighting more obvious monsters to worry or even notice whatever criminal stuff Marcone is doing. That kind of fatalism just threw me and didn't seem to make all that much sense.

first combat

I'm playing a dresden files game online, and I'm a kind of disappointed with how little damage a wizard does against a supernatural enemy.

My character is an apprentice with a strong talent for invocation and iron nerves in the face of monsters. In particularly, she throws down electricity like Dr. Tesla, leaving monsters extra-toasty in her wake. Or in theory should; her evocation stats are that of a Full White Council.

But even hitting a ghoul with 4-6 shifts of various energy doesn't seem to cause any serious consequences. Sure--the story-teller gives them the consequences "burns everywhere" but it doesn't seem to impede them. No knock back, nothing.

Also--I made a rote that puts some spirit punch behind a sword--and thought I got 7 shifts on the bastard. (spirit =4, weapon=3) but it came back 'cut on arm.'

I'm kind of disappointed. I mean--Morgan's example spell is 8 shifts split into two, and the effective is The Earth Swallows My Enemies and Crushes them Like Stale Cookies.

Is my GM being stingy with PC-awesome? Or have I misread the combat rules?

One City, Two Games

We started a new Dresden game last night, which means I’m currently running 2! Group 1 has been playing for about 4 sessions (including city creation, character creation, and play time) while group 2 just finished city creation last night. Both groups opted to ‘Dresden-fy’ Philadelphia, since we all live near there, and I think the similarities and differences between both groups are interesting (there’s no player overlap between groups).

Group 1

City Aspects: The Rift (fallout from the Philadelphia Experiment means portals to the Nevernever abound), Here They Come! (problems with gangs and flash mobs), and Philly Phantasms (the souls of the dead have been trapped since the city’s inception)

Mortal Status Quo: Sports, traffic, & corruption
Supernatural Status Quo: Everyone knows, no one believes

Movers and Shakers: Unions, Mafia, the White Court, the White Council, the Masons, and Street Vendors (like a grass roots coalition against the Nevernever)

Faces of Note: Damien (the mysterious caretaker of a gateway to the Nevernever. The gateway is in a night club for the supernatural), Changeling half brothers (one half ogre, one half satyr) who reside in Reading Terminal Market, Benjamin Franklin (a White Court vampire laying low by posing as the janitor of the Franklin Institute. He thinks Tony is a simple thug), Teraka (Rakshasa leader of the shapechangers that call the Zoo home. She doesn’t like the White Council or the White Court), ‘Kid’ (a child who chose not to grow up. He’s also the architect who turned the murals in Philly into portals to the Nevernever. He likes Ben’s inventions), ‘Tony’ (the mafia power behind city hall. He occasionally hires the half ogre changeling as muscle), and Kate Beckensale (looks like the actress, same name, not the same person. She’s the power behind the White Court. She thinks Ben is a dirty old man, but tolerates him because he’s over 200 years old. She’s got a working relationship with Tony. Note: I think the players were tired since it was midnight and she was the last face they created)

Group 2

City Aspects: Whoever Has The Muscle Runs The Show (currently the mafia is in charge, but their grip is fragile), Thin Veil (portals to the Nevernever occur naturally), and Who Watches The Watchers? (secret societies abound)

Mortal Status Quo: They’re all too busy to see what’s going on
Supernatural Status Quo: City of Accords

Movers and Shakers: Mafia, Philly SI, a Coven of (mostly benign) Sorcerers, a Dragon, the Historical Society, and a mysterious race of subterranean creatures most people know nothing about.

Faces of Note: Estelle (the sweet old lady who owns the occult book store), Joey McConnell (the Mafia collector who thinks he’s dating Amanda. Estelle reminds him of his grandma.), Amanda (the bartender of the local supernatural pub. She likes Joey as a friend, but is secretly dating Grim Parker), Ping (a leprechaun-like fae who lives in Love park and everyone thinks is a midget hobo), the ghost of Al Capone (who hates just about everyone except the church), Bernie Malone (the mafia don. Her name is actually Bernadette. She’s got the mayor in her pocket and doesn’t like SI because they’re always snooping around), Grim Parker (Captain of Philly SI. Secretly dating Amanda. Distrustful of the coven of sorcerers because they’re open about their magic), Rev. Henry Frost (head of the First Presby. Church and a shepherd to his flock, defending against the creatures of the Nevernever. He’s a friend of Amanda’s family and introduced Amanda and Parker. He’s trying to find a way to put Al Capone’s ghost to rest).

Analysis

I’m sure there’s an impact, so I’ll put it up front – group 1 has read nearly every book in the series. Group 2 is just starting (they’ve all gotten through Storm Front and most are working on Fool Moon or Grave Peril).

Both groups placed importance on corruption and the mafia, along with easy access to the Nevernever. I think it’s interesting that both groups included people from only 2 mover groups in their faces. Group 1 left the Unions, White Council, Masons, and Street Vendors as unknowns. Group 2 left the Sorcerers, Dragon, Historical Society, and subterranean creatures as unknowns.

Group 2 preferred inhuman movers to group 1’s human bend. Group 1 has all but 1 mover maintaining the status quo, while group 2 is more evenly distributed (3 for, 2 against, and 1 on the fence). Both groups included the Ship Yard, Eastern State Penitentiary, and City Hall as places of note.

Group 1 has many more supernatural faces in their mix. However, group 2 made the relationships between faces much more personal and more complex (lending themselves to some great story hooks).

I was a little worried that I might not be able to keep the 2 games separate in my head. But I think they really feel like 2 different cities. I’m interested to see what kinds of differences there are in the characters, when we get to that point.

Dresden-Character for an online game that never got off the ground

Please be nice. I usually don't show anyone anything I write, and this isn't the next Great American Novel--I was just trying to give the GM an idea of what my character was like. Feel free to adopt Agnes for one of your own games, though it would really cool if you let me know.

"I don't know what happened. I just..I guess I was in shock. I recognized Aaron from one of my classes and there was something...wrong with the men chasing him. I yelled at them--something about calling campus security, but they just came after me too, and Aaron yelled at me to run. When they cornered us--it was like something snapped. I just *knew* they were monsters--and, very strangely, I found I knew what to do with monsters. My next thought was "I think I might be going into shock..cause this should bothering me a lot more" Yeah, that was less cool.
It was dark and raining, but I could see--because the power lines were arcing behind me. There were the men chasing us who looked like drug addicts or something--except there was something really seriously wrong with them. But a guy in a suit was strolling after them. Casually.
I picked up a piece of rebar from the construction site--you know, where they're building the new library---and noticed that the man in the suit chasing Aaron looked...worried for a second.
"No." I said. It seemed loud, but I doubt he heard me over the thunder. It was like the thunder said 'no' too. Then he came at me impossibly fast---I lashed out at the motion itself more than anything. As fast as he was--the electricity was faster. It slammed into him. Just a second of blinding light hitting him, like a Titan with a Louisville slugger and he was the baseball. It embedded him in the side of a truck. He got up slowly, I could hear the metal over the..growl..of thunder. I could still see him though, because the Electrical lines behind us hissed and snapped with lightning..

.It was then I realized that I could *feel* the lightning. I could feel it in the sky, like a circling bird. I could feel it in the power lines, growling like an big angry dog.

Like it was waiting for me to say, 'sic 'em'.

Anyway, I thought I was crazy afterward. But I guess you guys showing up like in Harry Potter means I'm not crazy, doesn't it? So you guys are all Aurors, then? Does JK Rowling know about this?"

---Excerpt from a debriefing of Agnes after her discovery of her magical potential and immediate violation of White council protocol 8e and 11a (supernatural obviousness in a public venue, and damage of public property--respectively)

Name: AGNES SMITH
High Concept:WARDEN-IN-TRAINING
Trouble: WAR-ZONE EDUCATION
Aspects:
Background: RAISED BY THE PUBLIC LIBRARY SYSTEM Parents aren't supposed to have favorites..but they did, and Agnes wasn't it.
But, hey--at least her teachers liked her.
Rising Conflict: AND LIGHTNING WITH ITS RAPID WRATH: A nerdy library-recluse of a freshman,
Agnes didn't know what to think of the rise in violent crimes on campus. When she and a classmate were attacked,
they found that Vampires did exist and she could fight back.
First Story: [APPRENTICE TO JOSHUA] When her master is killed by red-court vampires, Agnes is sent to a new wizard for training--one that
doesn't really want her around, but clearly needs help. (It's a shame she can listen in Latin perfectly well).
How is she going to convince this new wizard that she can fight and back him up despite her inexperience with magic? Trying Times .
Guest Starring: [WHAT WOULD MARCUS AURELIUS DO?] A very creepy visiting professor and an oddly unprepared transfer student are both sneaking around the Classics department at odd hours.
with Warden Joshua out of town, can Agnes figure out who's the real threat? And what is there interest in the recently discovered manuscript..?(Brother Jin of the Iron Crocus Guard). The Lost Scroll of Mithras .
Guest Starring Redux: 16TH CENTURY (WEEKEND) WARRIOR (When a spirit from Never-never invades Historical Reenactment Society's Battle of Agincourt, it's up to Agnes and Sutter O'Hara to keep the event from turning into a real blood-bath. Co-starring Sutter). St. Crispin's Day Massacre .

Skills:
Superb (+5):
Great (+4): Discipline, Conviction Scholarship,
Good (+3): Weapons, Empathy, Lore
Fair (+2): Endurance, Performance, Alertness
Average (+1): Presence, Athletics, Resources

Template:
Wizard [-6]

Stunts:
Riposte: On a successful defense with Weapons,
you may sacrifice your next action to turn that
defense into an immediate and automatically
successful attack. [Weapons, -1]

Powers:
Evocation [-3]
Ritual (Wards) [-2]
The Sight [-1]
Soulgaze [+0]
Wizard's Constitution [+0]

Specializations:
Evocation: Elements (Air, Fire, Spirit); Power: Air +1
Thaumaturgy (Ritual): Wards (Complexity)

Rote Spells:
Edge of Morning: Agnes' rote summons razor-thin edge of spirit to her sword
Agnes' sword isn't just a Big Sharp Thing to her--it's a symbol of using her will for good.
In short, it's her Hero Club card, the wild conviction that she can stand up to monsters/bullies--and for Agnes, that's a happy thought.

Control Electricity (ZAP!): (5 shift air attack) Agnes fires a crackling blast of electricity at her target.

Force Shield:(as described)

Focus Items:
Agnes' Sword (+1 Spirit)
Agnes' Rebar Wand (+1 Offensive Air Power)

Enchanted Items:
What it is (what it does)

Stress:
Mental: o o o o
Physical: o o o
Social: o o o
Total Refresh Cost: -7

Hey all,

Just wondering if anyone has any links to any podcasts of people playing the game. Someone asked me about it, and I thought it would be a cool thing for people to hear. Especially those trying to figure out how to run/play the game.

Have a great weekend.

stacey

First thoughts on my campaign...

So our gaming group is getting ready to start a campaign of The Dresden Files Rpg. The group consists of Henry, Dawn, Christin (all of whom helped playtest the game with myself), and Katey (this is her first time to play any rpg).

Taking someone new to gaming is something my group has done a few times over the year. Usually, it always started with D&D, but we really do not play that anymore, and no one should ever have to start gaming for the first time with the confusion that D&D can bring to bear. Therefore, it should be interesting to see Katey get to do this for the first time. I think she will be good at since she is very creative and more than a little odd. That is a nice combination for a gamer.

So in getting this started, we have to figure out all of the normal stuff you need to figure out to play DFRPG. They include:

Power level of game. It can be Feet in the Water (6 refresh, 20 skills, skill cap at Great), Up to Your Waist (7 refresh, 25 skill points, skill cap a Great), Chest Deep (8 refresh, 30 skill points, skill cap a Superb), and Submerged (10 refresh, 30 skill points, and skill cap at Superb). The refresh rate is important because if you want to have magic or other skills it lowers your refresh rate, which also is the amount of fate points you have for the game (which allow you to do some cool things as a player). You really cannot play a magic wielding wizard until you get to the Chest Deep level. I imagine they will choose Submerged, since it is the one where you can have the most powerful characters/antagonists.

City Creation. Will they choose NYC again? We did that in the playtest, but I want them to do what they want. They could make a Paris scenario, or even create there own “Gotham City”. My guess is they will make another NYC…which I have no problem with. There is so much to work with here in the Big Apple.

What kind of game they want. Could be an action packed game, or they could go the mystery route. Both are fun, but it will shape the kind of characters they want to create.

That is the start of this, and I am really excited to get going soon! The biggest problem is gettung us all together.

http://www.dresdenfilesrpg.com/2010/04/27/designers-corner-thaumaturgy-and-the-value-of-playtesters/

I think the reason why I like Evil Hat so much is that they are very gracious for whatever help they receive from others. It is nice to see them throw a "shout out" to the playtesters from time to time. Yeah the games are great, but their willingness to be a part of the gaming community and the gratitude they show people is very nice. This is a very nice post by Lenny.

Stacey
